I should have known going in to this book that Lisa Suzanne was not only going to leave me a conflicted mess again but she was going to make me love every second of it. And she did. I’m conflicted (again) and I LOVE it.
Brian Fox...the man that I can’t seem to stop loving no matter how hard I try is back with his own story. Having previously met Brian in the A Little Like Destiny series (which doesn’t need to be read before this duet but I highly recommend it), I went into this book already having conflicting feelings towards Brian. On one hand when he’s playing nice, he’s extremely easy to fall for. On the other he’s selfish, manipulative, stubborn, bitter, and honestly he’s just not a nice person at times. In It Started With A Lie we finally see Brian starting to realise that he needs to change. Used to having his brother Mark there to bail him and his company out he’s caught off guard when Mark not only cuts him off but also throws in a major game changer in the shape of sexy professional business fixer Vivian Davenport. Vivian is not one to put up with anyone’s bad behaviour but even she knows she’s got a fight on her hands with Brian. Butting heads constantly and dealing with his resentment of her been there only makes her even more determined to do what she’s been paid to do and get his company back on the right path. Throw in Brian’s lie about them been in a relationship and things are about to get complicated between them. I really liked Vivian. She won me over fairly quickly and I would have loved to have gotten some of her POV.
This is not one of those books where the main characters start off hating each other but by page six they’re falling into bed together. The chemistry between Brian and Vivian is a constant palpable energy that you can feel even as you read. The changes she brings about in Brian finally show him to be the man I originally fell for so long ago and I fell for him all over again in this book. I am once again Team Brian.
This book ends with a bang and sets up for It Ended With The Truth perfectly. I have anxiety after finishing. Is Brian going to revert back to the old Brian? I really, really hope not but at the same time I kind of hope he does (because who doesn’t love an asshole man?). I’ve ended up (yet again) feeling conflicted over the characters. The ones I thought I liked? Mmmm. The ones I thought were trustworthy, now I’m not so sure about. I can’t wait for the next book to get some answers (and more Brian of course).
