This book was an unexpected surprise. I wasn’t expecting the storyline to be like it was, the twists and turns or the gritty, rawness of Cora and Penns story, and I have to say I absolutely loved every single word.
Penn really is a tortured soul. Constantly reliving the moment he lost everything has left him a shell of the man he used to be. There’s something about his grief that makes him more relatable and this author has gotten his emotions across perfectly. The feeling of complete devastation coming from Penn will make anyones heart break for him.
Cora is a young woman stuck in a life she’s desperate to escape from. Cora’s life is far from perfect. It’s dangerous, a delicate and constant balancing act. I adored Cora. She won me over very quickly and she’s definitely the star of this book. Trying her hardest to make the best of what she’s got, the strength and determination she shows astounded me. She’s a woman that looks after everyone else often without a thought of what she wants.
There’s an instant connection between Cora and Penn but Cora’s life is complicated and Penn isn’t mentally ready to let anyone in. Over time they start to make headway but with them both keeping secrets (some we know, some we don’t) there’s no guarantee that they’re going to get a happily ever after or even a happily for now. They’ve both had very sad, tragic things happen in their lives and if anyone deserves a hea it’s these two characters. I read this book with a feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop and when it drops, the repercussions are going to be felt by and affect everyone.
I loved this book. I struggled to put it down. The characters have a depth to them that makes them very easy to like, the story was amazing and I was devastated when I got to the end and the pages ran out. I can’t wait for the second book in this duet. I’m a massive fan of this author and this is another brilliantly written emotional romance from Aly Martinez.
