“What the hell is wrong with you?” Scarlett asked, taking in my pale face and trembling hands.
“Some bloke just walked in here and asked me to have sex with him!”
Uggh! And he’d been all greasy black hair, gold fillings and overgrown ’tache, like an aging porn star. I stifled the urge to throw up.
Shaking her head in disgust, Scarlett rolled her eyes. “Hate to break it to you, precious, but you are working in a brothel, you know.”
“But—”
“But nothing. What the hell did you expect him to ask for, a burger and fries?”
“I kept telling him I was only the receptionist, but he didn’t seem to care. He told me he’d pay extra if he had to.” I fought to calm my racing heart and queasy stomach.
Scarlett’s eyes narrowed. She didn’t look happy. It occurred to me that maybe I should have kept my mouth shut.
“What do you mean extra? How much extra?”
“Um…” I swallowed hard. “Three hundred dollars.”
The temperature in the room plummeted as a blast of ice-cold fury filled the air.
What!” she screeched. “And you turned him down?
“But—”
“Jesus Christ!” she hissed and bolted over to the waiting room. “Shit, where the hell is he now?”
My glance flickered toward the door. Scarlett’s followed. For the briefest of moments, I thought she was going to drag him back in and make him apologize for being an insensitive bastard.
Instead her eyes widened in shock. “What! You let him walk out of here? You selfish fucking cow. You mightn’t have wanted him, but what about the rest of us girls? Three hundred bucks and you just let him walk out of here? Jesus! Prue is going to go off her nut when she hears about this.”
Prue was the Madame and owner of Heavenly Pleasures. An outwardly serene woman with immaculate hair, but nonetheless seriously scary with a sinister reputation, not unlike Cruella DeVille on a bad day, and therefore someone I did not want to cross.
“Oh, please don’t say anything,” I begged, on the verge of tears. “Look, I promise if he comes back in, I’ll call you out straight away—before JoJo. Just don’t mention it to Prue. I was just a bit taken aback, that’s all, and didn’t know what to do.”
This part was true. Haggling for sex wasn’t something we’d covered in secretarial college. Maybe it was the look of pure terror on my face or possibly Scarlett was in a rare compassionate mood, but after a moment’s hesitation she stopped scowling, her expression softening in what could well have been pity.
“Okay. I won’t say anything—this time,” came with reluctance. “But of course I’ll expect some more bookings, if you get my meaning.”
Yes—her meaning was loud and clear. She was blackmailing me, but I was in no position to protest. I nodded.
Her mood lightened. “Hey, cheer up, will you? So what if some ugly punter wanted a poke? Jeez, you’re not the first one to have the hard word put on them by some tosser, believe me. Guys come in here, think they’re God’s gift to women and although they know you’re not a worker, it gives them a sick thrill to think they can convince you to drop to your knees for a blow job—even if it is for three hundred dollars.” She threw me a disgusted look and shook her head in disbelief. “I reckon in their pathetic little minds they’re convinced they’ve seduced you with their hot looks and charm. Losers, that’s what they are. Anyway, I suppose it’s probably just as well you didn’t take him up on it.”
“Really?” I brightened, seeing it as a sign I was forgiven.
“Yeah, the girls would have flattened you if you had.”
Oh, God. I felt ill. What on earth had happened to my perfect life?
Two months ago, I had never met or even spoken to a prostitute. Two months ago, I’d had no idea brothels even existed outside the red light district of King’s Cross. Two months ago, I’d thought French, Spanish and Greek were southern Europeans rather than hooker code for certain sexual practices. And two months ago, I’d been happily looking forward to marrying my fiancé, Brad, an up-and-coming lawyer who planned to be the youngest junior partner in the law firm where he worked.
Yes, two months ago my life had all been mapped out before me.
But that was before a day out in the city to catch up with an old friend triggered a series of events that would ultimately bring about my downfall. Yep, it was at that point I can honestly say my life had bit the big one, nose-diving to newly discovered depths of desperation and despair. I was completely screwed and I didn’t have anyone to blame but myself…

About Isla Dennes

Isla Dennes
Married, mother of one son and three daughters, Isla Dennes developed a love for writing while employed in her dream job as the owner of a book shop situated in a seaside resort town in NSW, Australia. Not content in simply reading every book in the store, she found herself compelled to create novels of her own.
Had she concentrated more on sales and less on writing she might well have retired a wealthy woman, but writing won out in the end, with the result being a lifelong passion for creative writing across a number of genres, including a brief but regrettable sojourn into horribly sentimental New-aged poetry which is best forgotten.

You need to read Prelude before starting Interlude. This is a continuation of Lina’s story and starts where Prelude finished.

My review is going to be vague due to possible spoilers.

When we last saw Lina she was left reeling. Now she’s trying to pick the pieces up and figure out how to carry on. Hurt by two of the most important men in her life, she’s understandably left confused from recent events. Just as she starts moving forward, her life is yet again disrupted and she has some tough choices to make.

I loved Lina in Prelude but she started irritating me a little in this book. The way she was so easily placated when asking for answers annoyed me at times. I’m a very inquisitive person so I found it hard to understand why she was so easily distracted and so forgiving when it comes to Julian, and even though she eventually gets those answers, she niggled at me a little with her bury her head in the sand attitude. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t sympathetic to her because I was. She’s a very sweet, likeable woman and it was easy to put myself in her situation and feel how conflicted she was.

Julian is a secretive man. His actions don’t always match his feelings and I admit he left me feeling just as confused as Lina at times. Slowly his secrets are revealed and I couldn’t help but love him that little bit more after getting a glimpse of the real Julian.

I think the surprise for me in this book was Andrew. In Prelude everything about him bored me, his personality, his dress sense and don't even get me started on his 'finesse' in the bedroom *insert the worlds biggest eye roll here*. He annoyed me so much with his selfish, blasé attitude.... I’m shocked but Ms Dar somehow managed to change my opinion of Andrew in Interlude and made me into a fan of his.

I knew after reading Prelude that Auden Dar was an author to keep my eye on and this book shows I was right. It’s got the perfect balance of romance, angst, secrets and hot chemistry. The characters grow and mature throughout the story and Lina is very easy to relate to throughout both these books.

If you haven’t read this duet yet I urge you to try them. A really enjoyable, unputdownable sweet, hot romance that I loved. I can’t wait for more from this author.

Release Blitz & Review...A Shameless Little Con by Meli Raine

Title: A Shameless Little Con
Series: The Shameless Series #1
Author: Meli Raine
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: January 30, 2018

Blurb

I didn’t do it.

I never betrayed my friend.

Last year, I was kidnapped along with presidential candidate’s daughter Lindsay Bosworth, forced to help her assailants, my mother implicated in one of the biggest political scandals in American history.

I've been cleared of any wrongdoing, but that doesn’t matter. Once you’re tried by the media, you’re guilty as sin. The truth doesn’t get the public’s attention.

But shame? Shame sells.

And everyone assumes you’re tainted.

Now I have my own personal security team, courtesy of the United States government. Not the one you learned about in civics class, though.

I’m being tracked by the deep state. The shadow government. They’ve assigned Silas Gentian to be with me twenty-four seven. He thinks he knows everything about me – all of it bad -- and he does.

On paper.

Like everyone else, he assumes I’m a traitor. A backstabber. A betrayer. Someone who helped a group of violent psychopaths, puppets of powerful men in Washington who made me into a tool.

Yet I see how he looks at me. True desire can’t be faked.

Or hidden.

And that goes both ways.

He assumes I’m trying to fool him.

And he might be right.

But not for the reasons he thinks.

A Shameless Little Con is the first book in the Shameless trilogy by USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine.

Excerpt

“Has it ever occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, if you thought it through, there might be a completely different angle on every part of this mess? That maybe I’m telling the truth?” I taunt him. That’s how this feels–like nothing but a nasty game. The push-pull of wanting him to treat me like a human being and wanting to lash out and hurt him is infuriating, but it is better than sitting here and taking his negativity like a passive little doormat.

“Of course I have.”

“And you’ve rejected that. Completely.”

“Yes.”

“Then you’re really bad at your job, Silas,” I say, letting all the bitterness and contempt come through my voice.

“You’ve wounded me, Jane.” Turns out he can do contempt, too. Better than I can.

“I mean it. Anyone whose job is to protect people can’t be such an absolutist. It makes you weak. Gives other people an easy shot at you.”

“‘Other people’? Do you mean people like you?”

“No. I mean people like the ones who attacked Lindsay.”

“Right. People like you.”

I shake my head slowly, the waves of panic flowing through me, giving in to them. Letting them come because what choice do I have?

And guess what?

You can feel all of that panic, let the anxiety overwhelm you, nearly black out from the incongruity of being shamed, driving toward an unknown destination where you have no control–
–and still stand up for yourself.

“I have nothing left to lose, Silas. My mom is dead, my reputation’s beyond salvageable, I don’t have a job or a place to live, and everywhere I go someone’s trying to kill me. Even my online world is nothing but garbage and threats from shitlords. So, as a simple thought exercise, can you try? You’re protecting me. Someone assigned you to me. Give me the courtesy of doing your job completely. If I’m stuck with you–and I know I am–I, at least, want you to do your best.”

Having read the Harmless series I’d already met Lindsay and knew part of her story but as her past is explained in this book, you don’t need to read them first.

Lindsay is living day to day knowing someone’s out to get her and it soon becomes obvious just how far they’ll go. After been accused of betraying her best friend and setting her up for a horrific attack, Lindsay finds herself losing everything and everyone close to her. With only one person willing to help her, she finds herself under bodyguard Silas watchful and judgemental eye.

Silas has seen the evidence against Lindsay and he’s adamant she’s guilty. But the more time he spends with her, the more he starts to doubt her guilt. With Lindsay in danger, hes determined to keep her safe. I loved Silas. He’s stubborn, protective and once he starts to open up he’s extremely easy to like.
This book was everything I’ve come to expect from a Meli Raine book. Full of twists, suspense, plenty of action with some humour thrown in, this book had me hooked and left me desperate for the next book.

LookThePart Full
Synopsis
Flint Hopkins finds the perfect tenant to rent the space above his Minneapolis-based law office.
All the T’s are crossed and I’s dotted on Ellen’s application. Her references are good. And she’s easy on the eyes.
Until …
Flint discovers Ellen Rodgers, Board-Certified Music Therapist, plays music. Bongos, guitars, singing—not Beethoven administered through noise-cancelling headphones.
The cut-throat attorney serves up an eviction notice to the bubbly, constantly-humming redhead who's too sexy for her own good. But luck is on Ellen’s side when Flint’s autistic son, Harrison, takes an instant liking to her. A single dad can’t compete with guitars—and rats. Yes, she has pet rats.
This woman …
She’s annoyingly happy with a constant need to touch him—adjust his tie, button his shirt, invade his space, and mess with his mind.
Still …
She must go.
Their lust-hate relationship escalates into something beautiful and tragic. This sexy, romantic-comedy explores the things we want, the things we need, and the impossible decisions parents and children make to survive.

Excerpt:

There’s something thrilling, even a little forbidden, about a man in a perfectly-tailored suit. Flint Hopkins wears the hell out of a three-piece suit. Not a single wrinkle. Not a hair out of place. Not a scuff mark on his shiny shoes. His lips move, but all I hear is “I wore this suit for you today” as his hands make their rounds: caressing the buttons on his jacket, twisting his cufflinks, and adjusting his tie. It’s sophisticated fidgeting. “You said you’re a therapist, not a music teacher.” Observant men are sexy too. “I did. And I am. Specifically, I’m a music therapist. Do you want me to explain what a music therapist does?” “No. I just want you to look for a different space to rent. I’ll give you two weeks.” He turns and makes it out the door in three long strides. My toes are on his heels in seconds, chasing him down the stairs. “Wait? You’re evicting me?” “I’m giving you notice.” “Notice? You’re kicking me out for what? Doing my job?” “Preventing me from doing mine.” He pushes through the door at the bottom of the stairs and makes a sharp right. “Hey, Boss, how’d it—” Amanda’s gaze moves from Flint to me as I follow him into his office. “Hi, Amanda. Would you happen to have the name of a good real estate attorney? I may need to sue my landlord for wrongful eviction.” “Um …” Flint turns, halting my forward momentum a second shy of slamming into his chest. “Shut my door, Amanda.” His eyes narrow. I don’t care how hot this guy looks in a suit. I won’t recoil under his glower. “Please leave it open, Amanda. I may need you to be my witness.” Arrogance tugs at his mouth. “A witness?” “For when you threaten me.” He unbuttons his jacket and takes a step back. A whoosh of oxygen leaves my chest like it’s attached to him. The man has an air of confidence and mystery about him that commands attention. When he turned around to face me a few seconds ago, I sensed the slightest agitation in his narrowed eyes and flared nostrils, but not anymore. It’s not hard to imagine Flint Hopkins in a courtroom—cool, calculated, ruthless. “You seem to be an intelligent person, so surely you can see how the noise level of your profession could distract me from doing mine. I think sharing space with other businesses is not a good idea. You need a building of your own or maybe you should work out of your house.” “I live in an apartment. And I’m sorry, Mr. Money Bags, but I don’t have the cash flow to buy or rent a building all to myself. You’re an attorney. How often are you even in your office? And when you are, what are you doing that requires complete silence? Charming snakes? Narrating audio books?” JEA-LTP-fbAN2

I LOVED this book. Having only read one previous book of Ms Ann’s, I had no idea that Flint appeared in another book (which I’m now going to devour asap).

Flint is a single dad of a ‘slightly autistic’ son, Harrison. After losing his wife, Flint has done his best when it comes to Harrison and you can’t fault him with the way he is with him. I found Flint extremely easy to like. There’s nothing I love more then a troubled, guilt ridden, moody asshole and Flint ticked all those boxes. Especially once he meets his new tenant, Music Therapist Ellen. Ellen is a ray of sunshine and I fell in love with her immediately. Strong, sassy and sweet, she’s the perfect woman! But she’s also not had the easiest time and she carries her own burden although she chooses to deal with it in a different way to Flint.

This book turned into so much more than I was expecting. Harrisons autism is extremely well written (as an autism mum I could really relate) and I loved how his quirks made me love him more. The obsessions, the daily diet battle etc are written perfectly as is Flints occasional frustration. Flint and Elle are just the sweetest together. The banter, the sexual chemistry and the emotions are all well balanced and help make this a truly unputdownable romance.

Release Blitz & Review...Awkward by Lily Kate

Title: Awkward.
Author: Lily Kate
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: January 30, 2018

Blurb

Ladies,

I know how things look from the outside. I’m rich. I’m a successful surgeon. I’m handsome. I should have women lining up from here to New Jersey clawing for space in my bed, but there’s one huge catch.

I’m f*cking awkward.

Every time I get a date, I spoil it. Asked if she’s pregnant? Check. Forgot her name? Check. Bought a meat lover’s pizza for my vegan girlfriend? Check, check, check.

This is why my best friend, romance fanatic Allie Jenkins, has declared that she’s swooping in to save the day. She’s prepared a list of required reading straight from The Ripped Bodice, and I’m supposed to take notes, learn from the best, and put that shit into action. After all, practice makes perfect, right?

Wrong.

This is my first book by Lily Kate and I was so excited to start this.

Doctor Jack Darcy is gorgeous, smart, sexy and a nice guy...but he’s awkward. I knew I was going to love Jack from the start just from his awkwardness. After yet another disastrous, awkward date Jack agrees to let his best friend Allie help him learn all about romance.

Allie is in a similar situation as Jack. Young and single, everyone seems determined that she needs put herself out there and start dating. Allie has other ideas through and is happy to focus her attention on helping Jack land the woman of his dreams.

Jack’s out of his depth dealing with an overbearing mother and her expectations, never mind been made to read romance books and go on disastrous dates. Throw in some confusing feelings and misunderstandings and you have a really fun, light hearted romance that I’ll definitely be recommending.

Release Blitz & Review...Baby Girl by C.M. Stunich

Baby Girl
C.M. Stunich
Publication date: January 29th 2018
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense
He died that night, alone, in the rain, in the dark, the boy that called me baby girl.
I was only seventeen; we were going to be together forever.
On his way to pick me up for prom, he swerved. I’ll never know what made him do it, what killed the boy I’d loved my whole life. With roses clutched in his hand, he bled out in icy wetness all alone.
His best friend is here though, and I’m pretty sure he loves me.
But after the accident, I left for a year and didn’t look back.
Now I’m back in town and my heart is like shattered glass.
Do I pick up the pieces and risk getting cut? And do I let another boy call me baby girl?

Author Bio:
C.M. Stunich is a self-admitted bibliophile with a love for exotic teas and a whole host of characters who live full time inside the strange, swirling vortex of her thoughts. Some folks might call this crazy, but Caitlin Morgan doesn’t mind – especially considering she has to write biographies in the third person. Oh, and half the host of characters in her head are searing hot bad boys with dirty mouths and skillful hands (among other things). If being crazy means hanging out with them everyday, C.M. has decided to have herself committed.
She hates tapioca pudding, loves to binge on cheesy horror movies, and is a slave to many cats. When she’s not vacuuming fur off of her couch, C.M. can be found with her nose buried in a book or her eyes glued to a computer screen. She’s the author of over thirty novels – romance, new adult, fantasy, and young adult included. Please, come and join her inside her crazy. There’s a heck of a lot to do there.
Oh, and Caitlin loves to chat (incessantly), so feel free to e-mail her, send her a Facebook message, or put up smoke signals. She’s already looking forward to it.

Embry lost the love of her life at the age of just seventeen. Suddenly all the plans she made with him and their best friend Phoenix for their future don’t matter to her. Nothing matters anymore. She tumbled into a pit of darkness that she can’t escape so she does the only thing she can and runs. Moving to a different city should help glue the broken pieces of Embry together again but that’s not the case. Returning home a year later, she’s still the broken girl she was and there’s still no one like Phoenix when it comes to understanding what’s going on in her head and what she needs.

Phoenix is a sweetheart. I loved him from the start. Not only did he have to deal with one of his best friends dying and the other leaving, he’s also managed to get himself involved in some other stuff that places his life in danger.

This story has all the feels. It’s emotional and heart wrenching. You can feel Embrys sadness through the pages and it’s hard not to empathise with her. It’s very easy to get inside her head and feel what she’s feeling. The story itself was a bit of a surprise to me. I expected the emotional story but I didn’t expect the characters to come to life like they did. The connection they share and the chemistry between them, their shared past, their need to protect the other, their need to mend and the journey they take you on are all written brilliantly.

This is a story of love, loss and second chances and I loved every word of it.
